Living Laboratory: Green-Wood’s 2023 Environmental Research Fellows
March 11th , 6:00pm – 7:30pm
Throughout 2023, Green-Wood’s Environmental Research Fellows have been hard at work on the Cemetery’s grounds researching the mechanisms that enable trees to thrive. Erica Kirchhof, a Ph.D. student from University of Wisconsin-Madison has been studying the variations for cold-tolerance in 26 different tree species, while scientists from GenSpace surveyed the organisms that make up the dynamic and complex rhizosphere (the region of soil that surrounds and is influenced by plant roots) around oak trees.
Price: Free. Registration required.
In this special evening presentation, the fellows will share their findings, methodologies, and the insights they gained from their research using Green-Wood’s tree collection. They will be joined by Sara Evans, Green-Wood’s director of living collections and curator, to discuss how they utilized the Cemetery as a field lab over the past year. These researchers were the recipients of Green-Wood’s Environmental Research Fellowship Award which was officially launched in 2022. You can read more about their projects here.
Free. Registration required. Please consider a donation to the Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer free and low-cost programs throughout the year. A Zoom link will be in your confirmation email upon registration.
