Día de los Muertos: An Artist Talk with Cinthya Santos-Briones
November 9, 2023 , 6:30pm – 8:00pm
Artist, educator, and cultural organizer Cinthya Santos-Briones will discuss the inspiration for her installation, Mictlán, a large-scale community ofrenda in celebration of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). On view in Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel, the altar draws inspiration from both ancient and modern conceptions of death in Mexico.
Price: Free. Registration required.
The title, Mictlán, refers to an underworld of Aztec mythology where souls of the departed spend eternity. Cinthya will be joined in conversation with Elena Ketelsen Gonzalez, an Assistant Curator at MoMA PS1, where she works with artists, activists, and organizations to create programs and exhibitions.
This talk will take place in the Modern Chapel. There will be an opportunity afterward to visit and contribute to the ofrenda in the Historic Chapel.
Santos-Briones is a visual artist, educator, and cultural organizer with indigenous Nahua roots based in New York. Her photography has been published in The New York Times, Vogue, Buzzfeed, The Intercept, The New Yorker, and The Nation Magazine, among others. Mictlán is her first large-scale installation.
