Amusing the Masses on Coney Island and Beyond: The Story of William F. Mangels
December 23, 2020 , 6:00pm – 7:00pm
In its heyday, Coney Island’s amusement parks drew massive crowds excited to take a spin on flashy modern rides. This is due in no small part to the genius of William F. Mangels, whose business designed and manufactured some of the most iconic rides of the era, including “The Whip,” carousels with galloping horses, and “The Tickler,” as well as elaborate shooting galleries, that entertained generations around the world. Green-Wood’s historian Jeff Richman is joined by Lisa Mangels Schaefer, Mangels’ granddaughter, who will illuminate the extraordinary legacy of the remarkable and innovative family business.
This conversation is part of our series of virtual programs about the history of Green-Wood and its permanent residents, Zooming in on History.
