The Green-Wood Historic Fund invites you to help us plant trees in Green-Wood for Arbor Day. It’s a great opportunity to get your hands dirty and plant a tree. The tree you plant during this event may provide shade and oxygen for your great-grandchildren someday! Festival of Arcane Knowledge at The Green-Wood Cemetery
Back by popular demand! Festival of Arcane Knowledge is an afternoon-long exploration of the intersections between art, death, and culture, featuring short talks, demonstrations, and film screenings presented by Morbid Anatomy’s community of makers, teachers, collectors, and rogue scholars. Special tours will be available of both the exhibition Envisioning the Afterlife: Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory and Green-Wood. The day's activities will be followed by an evening reception.

Magicians and Mediums
Magicians and Mediums
In the 1850s, New York City was absolutely agog for the tale of the three young Fox sisters who claimed they heard mysterious knocking sounds that came from the spirits. (The oldest sister, Leah, and their parents, are interred at Green-Wood.) Later proven to be a hoax, the phenomenon sparked the popular and enduring movement of spiritualism. This trolley tour will explore the legacies of Spiritualism and stage magic, which often came into conflict with each other. Visit the gravesites of many bizarre and fascinating practitioners of these two nineteenth-century phenomena.

The Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café), an informal gathering to discuss philosophical, political or scientific ideas. In 2011, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today, there are over 4,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world.

Celebrate the 200th birthday of Brooklyn’s native son and poet, Walt Whitman, through the lens of the people he worked with, wrote about, and knew best. You’ll visit two brothers, one a Union soldier and the other a Confederate, whom Walt Whitman attended to as a Civil War volunteer nurse; McDonald Clarke, the “Mad Poet” who inspired Whitman; Gabriel Harrison, the photographer of an iconic image of Whitman known as “the Christ likeness,” and many more.

Eternal Menagerie
Discover Green-Wood’s furry and feathered permanent residents! As religious motifs or cryptic symbols, animals are prominently featured on many of the Cemetery’s grand Victorian-era monuments and mausoleums. Learn their meaning while also visiting the graves of the few animals that are buried alongside their owners at Green-Wood, including such pets as Little Dace, Trilby, and Rex, as well as a horse that served in the Union army cavalry.

There’s much more to a cemetery than death. There’s life—a lot of it. In fact, since its founding in the nineteenth century as part of the Rural Cemetery Movement, before there was a Central Park, Green-Wood has been a place to engage with the natural world in an urban environment. Whether walking through the cherry tree allée, encountering the green monk parakeets that live in the Arch, or standing beneath a towering dawn redwood, you’ll learn about the environmental diversity that makes this Cemetery one of the city’s great natural resources.

When Joy Doumis and Jeremy Hammond approached Green-Wood in fall 2015 to ask if they could harvest the apples here, naturally we had to know why. To make hard cider of course! Spread across 478 acres, our urban orchard has over 150 Malus (aka apple) trees. Join Joy and Jeremy for the story of how they produced over one hundred bottles of Proper Cider in their own back yard, literally. Naturally, a tasting of the final product is included.

Memorial Day Concert
It’s a NYC favorite, now in its twenty-first year! Bring a blanket and enjoy this free early summer performance. The concert features The New York City Symphonic Band at Third Street, led by music director Paul Corn and hosted by guest conductor Brian P. Worsdale. Each year we feature the musical works of Green-Wood’s permanent residents Fred Ebb, Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Leonard Bernstein, and others. Local vendors will be on site selling food and drink throughout the afternoon.

This class is an introduction to the world of beekeeping. This two-hour class will touch on the basics of bee care and beehive maintenance. If weather permits, at the end of class, you’ll suit up in protective gear (we’ll provide) and join our Head Beekeeper, Nick Hoefly, to visit the beehives onsite. Spots are limited to 20 students, so don’t miss out!
The Public Lots Trolley Tour
The Public Lots Trolley Tour
The Green-Wood Cemetery is famous for its elaborate private burial lots and architecturally significant monuments. However, its lesser expensive public lots comprise about half of all burials at the cemetery.
Green-Wood’s Manager of Preservation and Restoration, Neela Wickremesinghe, and Director of Programs and Special Projects, Harry Weil, lead a guided exploration of these sites. The tour will highlight the "Colored Lots", seven burial lots on the cemetery’s southern border, including one for The Colored Orphans Asylum. Over 1,300 are laid to rest here, making it one of the largest existing burial grounds for African Americans who lived in New York City in the last two centuries.
Green-Wood’s public programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature, as well as the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
