(Sold Out) Encampment: Fireside Tales and Tunes

Mark the 240th anniversary of the Battle of Brooklyn with a truly revolutionary night. As you sip a drink and stroll the twilight landscape, Revolutionary War soldiers will illustrate life in the midst of a battle - setting up camp among Green-Wood’s hills, cooking, socializing, and steeling themselves for the next day's battle. Of course, the battles we modern New Yorkers face are not with the British, but often ourselves. By the light of the fire, Susan Kent of TELL IT: BROOKLYN will host an outdoor storytelling program that takes on battles of the body, spirit, and mind. Seasoned storytellers will take the stage, but attendees so inclined to tell their own battle story can throw their hat in the ring, too. The songwriting duo Charming Disaster will provide musical interludes.

The 240th Commemoration of the Battle of Brooklyn

Green-Wood Cemetery 500 25th Street, Brooklyn, NY, United States

The Battle of Brooklyn, fought in 1776 on land that is now a part of Green-Wood, was the first battle of the American Revolution to be waged after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. On the 240th anniversary of the Battle of Brooklyn, Green-Wood hosts a day of free commemoration ceremonies and 18th-century living. See parades, cannon fire, horses, re-enactments and historic cooking. Living history events and activities will offer kids a real feel for life during the American Revolution. This is a great event for kids and families!

Green-Wood’s public programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature, as well as the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
