The walking tour, lead by Ruth Edebohls, will visit the gravesites of Horace Greeley, “Boss” Tweed, the Brooks Brothers, Abigail Hopper Gibbons and others.  The 2005 film, “Gangs of New York” featured many of them as characters, including one, William “Bill the Butcher” Poole, who was actually dead by the time of the riots.  Walk may be hilly and strenuous – wear comfortable walking shoes.

Participants will be guided by Steven Estroff, Green-Wood’s Manager of Education & Outreach Programs and artist Michelle Tamares (former artist-in-residence at Old Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts) who will orient participants in ideas of composition and perspective and introduce guests to the vast treasure trove of outdoor sculpture, stained glass and migrating birds at Green-Wood. Visit some of Green-wood Cemetery’s most nefarious residents. Green-Wood Cemetery is the final resting place of many famous and heroic people, but some of its deceased denizens have a more blemished reputation. This walking tour, lead by Ruth Edebohls, will be hilly and strenuous – wear good walking shoes.

The monuments and mausoleums of Green-Wood have many fascinating stories to tell and some of the most interesting are not about the most famous. Visit with tour guide Ruth Edebohls the less-toured final resting places and hear the stories of the Father of Baseball, the “best woman who ever lived,” a gangster who died peacefully, the scandalous wife of an equally scandalous Civil War general, James Gordon Bennett and many more.  Walk may be hilly and strenuous – wear good walking shoes.
