Historic Chapel Book Signing & Video Presentation: D. M. Bennett: The Truth Seeker

Join Roderick Bradford, author of D. M. Bennett: The Truth Seeker (published in 2006), for his book and video tribute to Bennett. DeRogine Mortimer Bennett was a remarkable man: Shaker herbalist, then a leading free-thinker of 19th century America who took on the forces of narrowmindedness and went to prison rather than remain silent. Bennett is interred at Green-Wood Cemetery, in front of an elaborate monument paid for by his followers, which details his credo. After the book signing, join Jeff Richman, Green-Wood Cemetery historian, for a trolley tour featuring Green-Wood’s most fascinating inscribed monuments.

Admission for the video presentation and book signing are free and admission for the trolley tour is $20 per person, $10 for Historic Fund members.

The Draft Riots of 1863 is one of the saddest chapters in New York City history. Many of the participants– both famous and unknown – are buried in Green-Wood. Horace Greeley, Henry J. Raymond, “Boss” Tweed, the Brooks Brothers, abolitionist Abigail Hopper Gibbons, and others rest here along with little known victims of the riots. The 2005 film, “Gangs of New York” featured many of them as characters, including one, William “Bill the Butcher” Poole, who was actually dead by the time of the riots. The walk may be hilly and strenuous, so wear comfortable walking shoes.

The walk may be hilly and strenuous, so wear comfortable walking shoes.

Admission is $10 per person, $5 for Historic Fund members.
