You won’t be surprised to know that when Elizabe

You won’t be surprised to know that when Elizabeth Richards Tilton confessed to her husband, in the summer of 1870, to having an affair with her pastor, the Rev. Henry Ward Beecher—the most celebrated preacher in the nation!—it was the talk of the town. @newyorkermag, writing nearly a century later, in 1954, went as far as to dub it "the greatest scandal of the time, culminating in two church councils, and a spectacular trial that had the attention of the entire country." The amorous affair, sadly, overshadowed Tilton’s work up until then as a suffragist, petitioning alongside trailblazers such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony for women’s right to vote. Tilton died on April 14, 1897, and now rests at Green-Wood under a diminutive marker that simply reads "Grandmother.” (Lot 18495, Section 123) #historicgreenwood #greenwoodcemetery #brookyn #nyc
